The US Standard
US opens with natural, sustainable and useful products. This page is what a product has to satisfy before it appears, and what we will publish about it once it does.
Why this category needs a different standard
Most sustainability marketplaces verify against a certification scheme: organic, GOTS, Ecocert. Off-grid hardware has no equivalent, and the harm buyers actually suffer here is not vague greenwashing. It is a 300 W folding panel that delivers 90 W, a 20,000 mAh power bank holding half that, and a battery whose stated cycle life was never tested.
So our first requirement is not a badge. It is a number, measured under stated conditions, published beside the number on the box.
1. Legal and safety: pass or fail
No discretion here. A product either satisfies these or it is not listed.
- BIS certification where the product falls under a mandatory Indian standard: solar PV modules (IS 14286), lithium batteries (IS 16046), bicycles (IS 10613), LED lighting.
- EPR registration under the E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022 for any electrical or electronic item, and under the Battery Waste Management Rules 2022 for anything containing a battery. We check the registration number against the CPCB portal.
- Electrical safety evidence: IEC 62133 for cells and packs, UN 38.3 test summary for lithium transport.
- Legal Metrology declarations correct on the pack: importer, net quantity, country of origin.
A seller who cannot produce an EPR registration number is not selling legally in India, whatever else is true about the product.
2. Measured performance: the part that matters
Every listing shows the rated figure and the measured figure side by side, with the conditions the measurement was taken under. Where the gap is large, the gap is the story and we say so.

Evidence may come from an accredited third-party laboratory report, or from our own bench test. Where we tested it ourselves we say so, and we publish the method. A manufacturer's own datasheet is not sufficient evidence for a performance claim.
3. Repairability and life: the off-grid condition
A useful product should be clear about who made it, what it is made from, how it creates value and what responsibility sits with the seller.
- Spare parts available for a stated number of years, committed to in writing by the seller
- Repair documentation or a service manual published, not held privately
- Standard fasteners and non-glued assembly wherever the design allows
- Battery replaceable without destroying the product
- A stated take-back or recycling route at end of life
- Warranty terms in full, including what voids them
4. Disclosure
Published on every listing: country and site of manufacture, principal materials, recycled content with the basis for the figure, packaging materials, date of verification, who supplied the evidence, and any claim the seller made that we rejected or required them to qualify.
That last item is deliberate. A verification process that only ever publishes what passed is a marketing exercise.
Claims we will not carry
- Unqualified adjectives: "eco-friendly", "green", "sustainable", "natural" with nothing behind them
- Output figures without test conditions: a wattage with no irradiance and temperature is not a specification
- Capacity stated in mAh alone for a pack, where voltage makes the number meaningless
- "Lifetime" warranties without a defined term and holder
- Carbon-neutral claims without the underlying calculation and the offset registry entry
- Certification logos the product does not itself hold. A certified cell does not certify the product built around it
How review works
- Every listing is reviewed by a person. US opens as a curated marketplace, not an unfiltered catalogue.
- Sellers submit evidence; we verify it against the source: the BIS licence, the CPCB EPR registry, the laboratory that issued the report.
- Verification is renewed every 24 months, or immediately when a product changes specification. A verification date sits on every listing.
- US does not sell trust. Any commercial relationship affecting a listing or position will be stated on the page, not hidden in a footnote.
Challenge this
If you can show a published figure is wrong, we want to know before a buyer finds out. Email info@turtlelabs.co.in with the listing and your evidence. A confirmed error means the listing is corrected or removed, and the correction is noted on it rather than quietly applied.
This standard is a draft. It will change as we learn what is actually verifiable at reasonable cost, and each version will be dated so you can see what moved.
